Located a few
kilometers above Ovada, sull'ubertosa hill at the foot of Mount Colma,
the territory of Tagliolo Monferrato was granted in 967, for diploma of
Otto I to Aleramo, Marquis of Monferrato and was long regarded as
so-called "fiefdoms of the Empire". It was the seat of a feudal
court of appeal, except for sporadic short intervals. There is still a
way of saying, that local people say refering to that period: "Appeal to
Tagliolo". In 1477, again for the investiture of the Emperor, were
designated with the title of "Counts of Tagliolo" the Marquis
Doria Gentile, originating in Genoa; later the title passed to the
family of the Marquis of Tagliolo Pinelli Gentile, which still own the
castle today. The oldest part of the house of the Marquis is the
northern courtyard where there is still part of the fourteenth century
tower and the drawbridge drains are visible. Dated from later centuries
other architectural structures including the "square tower" whose top is
ascribed to the fifteenth century. The castle, one of the most popular
in the area, has generally excellent condition after the restoration
carried out in the last century by D'Andrade, who was able to maintain
the stylistic purity of the clean lines. The interior of the building
opens in sumptuous rooms with a rich gallery of ancient paintings and
with exceptionally valuable antique furniture. There are part of the
manor treasures; a beautiful library with great historical value and a
valuable collection of weapons. The dependencies of the castle, in their
atmosphere have welcomed in 1971 the third show of the Dolcetto di
Ovada.
To visit in Tagliolo the castle's courtyards Pinelli Gentile (with
permission of the property); The Ornithological Collection in the town
hall; the Oratory, once the parish church, dating from the thirteenth
century, rich in paintings and artistic furnishings; S. Vito, today
Cemetery Chapel with traces of the earliest Christian settlements; St.
Peter's Church in the homonymous village and the few, but enticing ruins
of a Cistercian monastery dedicated to Santa Maria di Bano, in Colombano;
Other oratories and chapels scattered here and there for the traveler
protection. One of the attractions of Tagliolo is provided by the
presence of a municipal water supply fed by the waters "bacteriological-pure
as well as oligo-minerals of therapeutic and diuretic value" that flow
from mountain springs.
The sport is represented in Tagliolo with the tambourine and tennis
resort of Maisetta and with a nice sports field in S. Vito.
Beautiful surroundings encourage hiking, among vegetation and pine
forests, and for those wishing to savor the beauty of places traveling
by car, there is an opportunity to revisit "the ancient salt route", the
easy road, which shows in modern key the route that led to Capanne di
Marcarolo across the Apennines.
To remember are the nice Fair following the Festival of San Carlo with
its procession, which falls on the Sunday following November 4; the
Spring Festival in Colma and the nice carnival that closes a period of
joy in celebrations before facing Lent in the so-called "Fat Sunday."
Local productions: notable characteristic wineries make wines like
Dolcetto and White Cortese.
