The dwelling place
develops around the primitive fortress built by the Cistercians who
designate the site "Maurenico" or "Morenixío". Despite the destruction
of Tortona in 1156 would bring upheaval, Pope Hadrian IV let Mornese
remain in the influence of the bishop of that city. Under the domain of
the Marquis of Monferrato, the town could enjoy special privileges
ranging from the exemption of the stamped paper to not pay taxes, the
allowance on trade in tobacco, salt and gunpowder. Unfortunately many of
the most flourishing craft industry, present until the middle of the
seventeenth century were destroyed during various wars. Three Genoese
families followed one another to the Mornese guidance: Doria will remain
the supreme feudal lords for two centuries until 1770 when took over the
Serra and then the Spinola. The ancient castle, rebuilt by the Genoese
on the ruins of the original, now belongs to the Marquis Doria, who
lives there in the summer and autumn months. It has an interesting
collection of paintings and a fantastic collection of antique weapons.
A beautiful stone door introduces into the castle that can be visited
with the permission of the property.
The stream that flows near Mornese corresponds to Gurgentum decanted by
Pliny; since the most ancient times gold was mined on its shores. The
Parish of St. Nicholas dominates the heart of the country; is in Baroque
style. The school houses the headquarters of the municipal library, rich
of a large number of volumes.
In loc. Mazzarelli, which nicely inhabitants divided into "Mazzarelli
from here", "Mazzarelli from middle" and "Mazzarelli from there", stands
the Shrine dedicated to St. Maria Mazzarello. A native of this village,
the Saint Maria Mazzarello was the founder of the Daughters of Mary Help
of Christians, they direct the Borgo Alto College for orphans of the
police. At the sanctuary you can visit the birthplace of the saint.
Sport in Mornese is divided into different directions: a green path
equipped for off-road and motocross,"off-road Championship" 2nd Sunday
of September in the village of Fornace. Tennis Tournaments and
football.
A religious feast particularly felt by the inhabitants of Mornese, which
also attracts many people outside, is Good Friday, this day you can
relive all together the "Passion of Christ."
Local productions: here bloom small craft activities, and the earth
gives great fruits and great wines D.O.C. (Dolcetto and White Cortese)
that is easy to buy direct-mind at "farms." They prepare excellent
elaborated meats and seasonable mushrooms and chestnuts as
pleasant surprises.
Some popular traditionally cevents cheer up residents and vacationers:
the sympathetic "donkey race", the patronal feast dedicated to Saint
Nicholas and the "ciliegiata" organized by the Pro Loco in the summer.
