Again it is a castle to mark the evolution
of the history of an area, and in this case is an imposing structure,
built for defensive purposes certainly, to dominate for centuries a land
however charming, now full of vineyards and cheerful villages .
The area has become a tourist center full of attractions including that
offer by spa treatments with healing waters, indicated in digestive
diseases, liver, metabolism and hypertension. Bottled, the waters
provide the same intake of therapeutic values. Among the most popular
names are the Lavagello, the Feja, the Sovereign, the Aurora, the Molino
Albedosa, and many more, equally important because, as says a great
Italian expert, Professor Giuseppe Bragagnolo, the waters that flow from
the sources of Castelletto d'Orba "are part of the geological phenomenon
that originated the Po Valley and have pharmacological and clinical
aspects of great variety." Aleramo, first Marquis of Monferrato, is one
of the first lords of this town that remains to his family until the
fourteenth century, when it goes for more than three centuries to the
genoese Adorno, family of illustrious Doges.
The manor, covered by a roof crowned with ghibelline battlements, dates
from the thirteenth century and contains fascinating details such as
elegant mullioned windows with columns and marble arches, some of which
bear aloft the bull's-eye, typical of classic gothic Piedmontese
ornament. The mullioned windows have been retained, according to the
original concept, without shutters. A visit to this aleramica fortress,
in excellent condition thanks to the restoration of D'Andrade, should
include the inner rooms, with doors and ceilings reborn chin-style,
where paintings are preserved, carpets, fabulous collections of weapons,
silverware and ceramics, chandeliers and wrought iron of the fourteenth
century and furnishings.
The castle can be visited with the permission of the current owner, Dr.
Gino Gardella.
To be included in the itinerary tourism are also the "Casa del
Marchese"(home of the Marquis) with its terracotta friezes, which
unfortunately no longer reflects all the splendid architectural beauty
and primitive art; one of the oldest Christian churches in the area, the
Romanesque church of St. Innocent of the Cemetery, whose interior is
decorated with precious frescoes, a door Medieval Urbica and the Parish
of S. Lorenzo and St. Anthony, the chapel known as the "Madonna" or San
Bernardino.
Worthy of note are other chapels scattered in the municipal area as the
Sanctuary of St. Caterina sul Mounte, the shrine of Santa Limbania and
the Oratory of San Rocco, the latter two buildings are decorated with
remarkable fifteenth frescoes.
We report as destinations of trips to tourist and artistic purpose Villa
Gavotti, Villa Cortella and the aristocratic house of Castelvero that
stands on the site of an ancient priory named after the first
evangelizer of the district, S.Marziano. In addition to the capital, in
the municipality there is also the populous village of Crebini.
The flourishing craft, commercial activities, the excellent hotel
equipment, the large dancing hall Paradise Studios, various games, a
beautiful olimpic swimming pool of Lavagello and the opportunity to
practice in a relaxing environment sports such as swimming, tennis,
football, bowls etc., make of Castelletto the perfect place for a long
holiday, for both young and old alike.
Local productions .: Castelletto d 'Orba is renowned worldwide for the
high quality of its wines, white Gavi and Dolcetto d'Ovada, for its
cakes and its cuisine; dishes that we can define "true masterpieces" of
flavor and fantasy .
In the town there is also the headquarters of "Teleradiocity".
