With its castle strategically perched on
the highest point of a hill and hidden by the woods, Casaleggio
dominates an area of lush vineyards, fertile land and pine forests
that characterize it as a "mountain area." The town grew as a result of
the importance of its fortress, built in part in the X and partly in the
eleventh century., As we read on the bas-relief at the entrance. The
village, separated from the manor that is surrounded by medieval
buildings, belonged by Imperial Diploma of Otto I, to the Land
Monferrina and Aleramo's descendants considered it excellent reference
point during their journeys to the domains in the East or from the ports
of where they embarked for the Crusades. It passed then into the hands
of the Genoese aristocrats like the Spinola (with investiture by the
empress of Byzantium, Sofia, sister of the Marquis of Monferrato), the
Fieschi, the Ristori and the Guiglia counts. Despite being located along
Capanne di Marcarolo's road that once led to the Apennine mountain pass
and suffered the succession and the passage of the most diverse
nationalities troops, the imposing structure of the castle did not
suffer serious damage over the centuries and still today we can identify
the intentions of its original architects which had nestled between the
square towers, not much higher than the central core. The building
became the "dell'Innominato" castle when Sandro Bolchi choose it as the
setting for some of the TV drama sequences "I Promessi Sposi" and thanks
to the grant of Guiglia counts, owners for a long time, you can visit it
in summer and autumn
The most important place of worship which brought together for centuries
the inhabitants of Casaleggio, Lerma and Mornese no longer exists: three
naves and very old, this first parish now ruined was transferred to the
fifteenth century closer to the castle, on the existing structures of a
Romanesque church. The latest Parish of S. Martino, built in the
nineteenth century, saves the valuable floor donated by Vittorio
Emanuele II and altars and valuable blades.
The current Casaleggio Boiro offers to sports enthusiasts a nice
football field and possibility to play tambourine. The whole area
including the artificial lakes Lavagnina with their gold mines, now
inactive, a haven of high tourist interest.
Local productions: an important cattle market sums at regular intervals
the intensity and the value of this business in the communal area; the
expanses of vineyards provide high quality grapes.
